2022 Municipal Election Toolkit

Ontario’s Municipal Elections are taking place on October 24, 2022. OBIAA has created resources and a toolkit that will assist BIA Boards and members in informing them about key practices in preparing for the Municipal election and BIA Boards elections, as the term of the BIA Board is the same as the term of the council that appointed them but continues until their successors are appointed. (Municipal Act 2001, c. 25, s. 204 (10))

BIAs’ roles, responsibilities, mandates, initiatives, and main streets are not one-size-fits-all and have changed, drastically over the years, with the pandemic adding an increased responsibility and changing the model of a BIA and our main streets.

The Municipal Election Toolkit includes guidance on how BIAs engage in elections, how to participate in ‘all candidates’ meetings, as well as communication strategies on what a BIA is.

Here are some examples of how OBIAA is helping BIAs leading up to the election:

  • Creating a social media content calendar
  • Providing letter templates to; members of Council, Board Council Representative, Clerks Department
  • Hosted weekly OBIAA Advocacy (Election) Committee meetings to ensure messaging is current and relevant
  • Hosting weekly Best Practices Calls for BIAs and Boards, and weekly newsletters
  • Video and presentation assets

OBIAA encourages BIAs to engage in election advocacy work, share the impact you are having with OBIAA, and talk about the issues your BIA and main streets care about, before, during, and after the election. Let’s #voteformainstreet

OBIAA is here for our BIAs during this Municipal Election. Make sure you join our Best Practices calls on Tuesdays at 2:00 pm, read our newsletters and follow our Social platforms.

Ways BIAs can get involved in the Municipal Election:

  • Attend and participate in an “all candidates’ meeting with your BIAs specific questions
  • Utilize the letter and presentation templates provided
  • Share and amplify the advocacy work of OBIAA in your networks
  • Explore OBIAAs Municipal election buttons below and other resources
